Zrmanja Canyon from the Boat

Boat ride on the calm part of the Zrmanja River and swimming at the mouth.

The boat tour of the Zrmanja River begins in Obrovac, where the river continues its journey through the canyon until it flows into the Novigrad Sea. Along this route, guests will have the opportunity to see many natural and cultural landmarks, starting with the city cemetery located just below Obrovac, built on the remains of the Benedictine monastery from the 13th century. Further downstream, there is the chapel of St. Nicholas, erected in the 18th century by members of the Italian merchant navy, which for centuries has borne witness to the importance of the Zrmanja River as a vital maritime and trade route.

The river continues its course through a deeper and wider canyon with increasingly sparse vegetation, its seemingly cruel steep cliffs dominating the landscape. In this vast expanse of rock and water, only a keen eye can spot the solitary cliff with the small stone building "Pržunac," historically believed to have been the last prison of the Croatian queen Jelena, underscoring the strategic significance of the Zrmanja River and its canyon in the historical context of this area.

At the very end of the canyon, as this karst beauty meets the sea, we enter the embrace of imposing cliffs, where the white-headed eagles and Odysseus's Cave are nestled, along with remnants of old settlements that locals refer to as "Old Šibenik." Thus, with its immense historical legacy and unparalleled beauty, the river quietly and discreetly enters the Novigrad Sea in a delta several hundred meters wide, where the boat turns around and returns to Obrovac.

This circular boat tour, starting and ending in Obrovac, lasts approximately 2 hours. It takes about an hour to reach the mouth of the river and another hour for the return journey.
